The food haven’s nightlife is full of vibrant street food!
Learn to cook some of Penang’s action-packed street food dishes, such as Char Koay Teow, open-fire Penang-style grilled brinjal known as Xio Kio, and an in-demand favourite, Belacan Tofu Goreng, which you’ll often see at many famous night markets.
With a winning blend of cultures, Penang is a perfect location for fusion-styled cheap eats & bites. Penang night market is held at different locations every day on the island, usually starting from 6pm, with the same moving vendors and food trucks. This makes it possible to cater to residents living across 4 major district cities. Mingle around roadside corners in Georgetown at night, and you’ll also notice street hawker stalls selling a wide assortment of mini dishes, that are often just as fulfilling!
Starting with a complimentary pick up service from your hotel or residence, in the morning we’ll visit Ayer Itam market, one of the oldest and busiest wet markets in Penang. Here you’ll learn more about fresh local Malaysian produce while wandering through the stalls of this otherwise hidden market area. Enjoy a cup of local Penang coffee, and sample an authentic hawker breakfast in a nearby kopitiam (coffee shop), before we head back to our cooking studio to continue your culinary adventure. With a refreshing nutmeg juice at your side and breathtaking bird’s-eye views of Penang, this vegetarian street food cooking class is yours to enjoy.

What we’ll Learn
Char Koay Teow
Hawker’s favourite Stir-fry Flat Noodles with Egg and assorted condiments
Xio Kio
Penang-style Grilled Brinjal with Spices and Tangy Sauce
Belacan Tofu Goreng
Penang deep-fried Fried Tofu marinated in vegetarian Belacan paste
Char Koay Teow has made it to number 14 of the world’s 50 best street food dishes, also consistently rated number 18 by CNN Travel. This dish has often been mentioned alongside Pad Thai, as the two jewels of stir-fry heavenly noodles. This is Chef Samuel’s best-selling dish, with students looking forward to learning the inner secrets of how this dish is prepared, as they’ve tasted the very same noodles elsewhere but nothing beats the Penang version. Xio Kio on the other hand, is often sold on stalls specifically serving grilled items. Belacan Tofu Goreng is an insanely savoury flavourful chicken dish, due to its Belacan marinade, a knock-off version of fermented shrimp paste deep fried into heaven.
